Dempster Mill was a struggling Nebraska farm equipment manufacturer that Buffett took a controlling stake in during the early partnership years. Unable to improve operations with existing management, he brought in turnaround specialist Harry Bottle, who dramatically improved profitability. The experience taught Buffett the challenges of operating poorly performing businesses even when purchased cheaply.
